I've been replaying Cultist Simulator (hard obscurantist card based literary roguelike about achieving immortality) and Book of Hours (sequel to that game, not a roguelike but equally as literary game about rebuilding an occult library) in anticipation for the upcoming demo release of the third game in the series, Travelling at Night, which has been termed a "disco-like" which is to say it's a CRPG without combat systems. Greatly recommend these games and anything else Alexis Kennedy has written for to anyone with an interest in historical fiction, occultism and literature in general.
What have you lot been playing recently and are you excited for any upcoming games?
2 Oblomov 2026/07/30(Thu) 18:12:24I've recently 100% GTA San Andreas. It took me about 55 hours of play time and one month IRL to complete the game. It's the first GTA game I've ever fully completed.
It's still amazing just how much content Rockstar managed to cram into a PS2 title - an entire state with three cities and vast countryside, over 100 missions, as well as various activities like gambling, dumping a policeman's body from a quarry, trucking illegal goods, conquering territory from rival gangs, dating girls, etc. Though R* had to sacrifice graphical fidelity (mitten hands in 2004? Seriously?) to achieve a game of this scale on relatively weak hardware, I still think this is the best GTA game ever, at the very least on the fact of it being so absurd and off-the-wall.

4 zetalyrae 2026/08/05(Wed) 02:06:56A somewhat unknown but really great game I played back in 2023 is Syberia (2002). It's a point-and-click adventure game. Generally I am very impatient about this type of thing and ragequit early. But it held my interest throughout, which shows how good it is.
The most striking thing is the scenery. You walk around pre-rendered 3D backgrounds. And though the CG is over 20 years old, my God, the art direction is so good! The backgrounds have not aged a day. I've attached one of the few screenshots I have on hand. Just a gorgeous game.

I've played through the official campaigns enough to know each of them like the back of my hand (well, except for Legacy of Rust) but I've never actually gotten all the achievements on the new Nightdive port -- so I've been working my way through them.

7 Acephale_Himedanshi 2026/08/05(Wed) 20:58:50 I've been playing GTA 3 with the tightened thrice mod, which makes every mission harder and adds new content like new interiors and so on. So far it's been really fun and I'm on the final mission.

Ohhh I'm pretty sure I have the physical edition of Syberia at my childhood home. I love point and click adventures and Syberia was always on sale at the electronics store for like 5€. I remember liking it back then

13 zetalyrae 2026/09/08(Tue) 01:38:06 Yesterday I played a bit of BioShock 2. The opening shot is gorgeous: you're in this ruined spa, filled with gorgeous undersea life, and this giant graffiti: "fallen, fallen is Babylon".
And the views of Rapture, ablaze with light. I'm usually very obsessed with realism, but if something is beautiful enough, you can get away with it. So I'm not thinking "at this depth the light wouldn't penetrate and you wouldn't see anything out the window", I'm thinking, "what a beautiful city".
I feel like the entire series, each entry is like a flawed masterpiece. There are so many concepts, ideas, moments, characters etc. that are great in isolation. But the conjunction I could never quite believe. Of course this is worse in BioShock Infinite because with parallel universes and such nothing makes sense.
